The Three Categories Of Man

Introduction: Man is a tripartite being. Man is a spirit being, he has a soul and lives in a body. Salvation is not automatic; you have to accept the person of Christ before you can be saved. Salvation is in three phases A. saved B. being saved C. and shall be saved. Therefore, when you are born again your spirit man is saved, but the soul is not yet saved, so the soul is being saved by the continuous renewal of God’s word and the body shall be saved at the appearance of Christ. But in this teaching we are going to learn the three categories of people that exist in life and the laws that control their actions. You must understand that when I use the word “man” I’m not only referring to the male gender but the both genders. As the word “mankind” refers to the whole human race.

1. THE NATURAL MAN 1Cor. 2:14, Ps. 51:5
The natural man is the man born into sin who decides to either repent or remain a willful sinner. He possesses the nature of the old man. He is the one unto whom the wisdom of God is foolishness. He is not born again and does not place value on things of God. He lives on the soul realm of life and he is only limited to the five level of his senses. The spirit of the natural man is cut off from the true life of God and therefore, cannot discern or judge spiritual things. He is controlled by his inordinate natural affections that totally violate the will of God. He is enslaved to Satan’ wishes and governed by the “law of sin and death.” Rom.8:2. The law of sin and death was enacted under the dispensation of the old covenant as a result of man’s continuous willful disobedience to God’s word by the hand of Moses. It brings the consciousness of sin, condemnation and instant penalty that could lead to death.

2. THE CARNAL MAN 1Cor. 3:1-4, Gal. 3: 3
The carnal man is the man who is born again, but does not live by the dictates of the Holy Spirit. He rises and falls on the whims and caprices of his fleshly lusts. He does whatever that pleases the flesh and displeases his creator. He possesses the charisma and lack the character of the Spirit. The Corinthian church is an example of the church that had all the spiritual gifts but lack the fruit of the Holy Spirit which reflects the character of God. This category of people has a form of godliness but denies the power thereof. The mind of the carnal man is polluted because it is not renewed with the word of God. Any Christian on this realm of life is still a spiritual babe and has not attained unto spiritual maturity of sonship.

When someone gets born again, the human spirit is recreated by the Holy Spirit through the word of God; but the soul is not yet born again. What such an individual needs to do is to give himself daily to the study of God’s word to transform his thoughts into God’s thoughts in order to live the new life victoriously. Moreover, the carnal man is governed by “the carnal law”.

The carnal law is the law that makes a Christian to struggle so hard to please God by human works of righteousness instead of relying on the finished work of grace wrought by Christ Jesus. Heb 7:16. Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. Therefore, there is a struggle between the spirit and the soul of man who gains control over another.

3. THE SPIRITUAL MAN ROM. 8: 1-14, 1 COR. 2:12, James 1:25
The spiritual man is that person who is born again and controlled by the dictates of the Holy Spirit. He conducts his life after the word of God and he discerns and judges spiritual things. He has come to a place of kingdom maturity and its responsibilities. A spiritual person is not moved by his sensory perception but by his faith in the living word of God. He is neither subject to the laws of sin and death nor the carnal law, but he is being governed by the “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.” Or “the perfect law of liberty.” This law contains the revealed word of God that guides, controls or dictates for the spiritual man. It is centered on the love of Christ and our new life in Him. This new law was established by Christ Jesus through grace and truth revealed to mankind.
